Dick Hay

Co-Owner, DVM & DABVP

Dr. Dick Hay is the co-owner and Medical Director at TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Davidson. He was born and raised in Toccoa, Georgia, a small town in the Northeast corner of the state, and obtained his BS from Davidson College in 1977. He spent his junior year of college studying in France and considers it one of his defining college and life experiences. He continued his studies by earning a Masters of Science degree in Comparative Physiology and spent two years as a research assistant in the Small Animal Medicine Department at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. It was during his studies there that he fell in love with the profession and went on to obtain his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the same school in 1985. Dr. Hay became a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2000 as a specialist in canine and feline medicine and surgery. He has been certified in Acupuncture for 10+ years. He enjoys all aspects of general practice, especially the relationships between pets and their owners.

His wife Pam is a retired college professor at Davidson College and they have two adult children. Dr. Hay is active in several community organizations including the Davidson Housing Coalition and the Davidson Lands Conservancy. When not at work, his favorite pastimes are hiking and traveling.

Áine Schanche

Medical Director, VMD

Dr. Áine Schanche is an Associate Veterinarian at TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Davidson. Dr. Schanche earned her Bachelor of Science from Swarthmore College in 2016 and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2020. Dr. Schanche then worked as an intern at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in Rhode Island before switching her focus to small animal general practice and working at a hospital outside of Boston. She joined the TotalBond family in 2021, primarily working at the TotalBond at Bethel hospital. Her areas of professional interest include ultrasound, surgery, and preventative care. Dr. Schanche was inspired to join the veterinary field after spending several weeks shadowing mixed animal veterinarians in Ireland and falling in love with the unpredictable, rewarding field! According to Dr. Schanche, the best part about being a veterinarian is being able to educate clients on how they can help their pets live the healthiest lives!

Although Dr. Schanche grew up in northern New Jersey, her mother is from Ireland and her father is from Norway. Dr. Schanche keeps busy outside of work by playing with her 6-year-old standard schnauzer named Siggi and her corgi/mini aussie puppy named Suki. She also enjoys spending time with her family, eating good food, hiking, exercising, reading, and hanging out with her friends. She is a proud member of the TotalBond Team and cannot wait to meet everyone's fur babies!

Makenzie M.

Veterinary Assistant

Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Makenzie decided after attending Maryville College to move somewhere new and found herself here around the Charlotte area. She loves how similar it is to her home state but that it comes with new people and adventures. Makenzie has 2 dogs currently- Reign, a 5-year-old long haired German Shepherd and JellyBean, a 10-year-old Jack Russell mix (quite the pair). She loves to take both dogs just about anywhere she goes, whether it's hiking, breweries, the beach, etc. If she goes, they go!

Makenzie remembers from a young age, her entire family talking about the connection she had with animals. Growing up around tons of animals; from cats and dogs to horses- you name it, she knew she always wanted to work in the vet field. After her first internship, she fell in love with teching. Spending every day with animals is a dream come true for her. The most rewarding part being able to care for a sick animal and seeing them become healthy again and living their best life.

In her free time, Makenzie enjoys being a dog mom, traveling, spending time with friends and family, wake surfing, hiking, really any outdoor activity (except for bee keeping- recently discovered bee allergy).

She calls Concord her home base and knew that she and her family would call China Grove their forever home after moving there in 2007. Tonya has two cats, Pepper and Gizmo, two dogs, Jazz and Layla, and a rabbit named What-not. She enjoys crocheting and spending time with family and friends in her free time.
